The struggling St. Albert Cardinals played the Lloydminster Twins in a wild doubleheader last Saturday at Hospital Diamond Park in Lloydminster.
The Cardinals were fired up in the morning and absolutely trounced the Twins in a 13-1 blowout. Cardinals’ Greg Student’s excellent pitching was on display in Lloydminster. He allowed only one hit over four innings and struck out four Twins to earn the win. Red Bird’s sluggers Zach Froment and Lance Bishop chipped in with three hits each and Tylor Jans got a pair of RBIs to seal the deal.
The Cardinals didn’t let up in the afternoon and again pounded the Twins, this time by a score of 12-2. Jans threw four innings and allowed one earned run to chalk up his seventh win this season. Jans batted as well as he pitched and knocked out a double and a triple to help his team to victory.

Despite heavy rain Friday and Saturday night Legion Memorial Park stayed open for play thanks to the efforts of its grounds crew and a number of volunteers. On Saturday night the Cardinals took it to the North Peace Hurricanes and walked away with a 10-7 win to start the third round of the season on a high note. The momentum wasn’t enough to carry the Red Birds through the weekend.
The Cardinals lost a close one to the Okotoks Outlaws Blue in a 5-4 nail-biter on Sunday, bringing their season record to a respectable 12-2. The Cardinals want to thank groundskeeper Willy for his hard work maintaining the fields this year. Despite the foul weather only one game was called off at Legion park this weekend.
The St. Albert Cardinals return from Red Deer as champions after going undefeated in a thrilling weekend tournament.
The Cardinals came out swinging Friday night and showcased their trademark offence with a 14-4 win over the Saskatoon Braves.
Saturday morning the team kept the ball rolling with a 14-3 victory over the hosting Red Deer Braves and a 12-6 win over the Spruce Grove White Sox.
Another win over the Saskatoon Braves secured the Cardinals a spot in the championship game against the Spruce Grove White Sox.
The team had a rough start but rallied as St. Albert’s pitcher Michael Brisson recovered from a shaky first inning to win MVP. Brisson allowed only eight runs on 80 pitches. The St. Albert Cardinals won by mercy rule in the fifth inning and took the trophy with a score of 18-8.
The second place St. Albert Cardinals take on the fourth place Edmonton Cardinals in a Red Birds rivalry classic Wednesday night at Legion Memorial Park. The first pitch flies at 7:00 p.m.
The St. Albert Cardinals were dominant early this season but have dropped two of their last four games. The Edmonton Cardinals looked excellent in their last five games and have really come into their own in the last half of the season.
St. Albert will be looking for big hits from Connor Burns and Jake Fischer to put them on the board early and regain some of the momentum they had earlier this year.
The St. Albert Cardinals last played on Canada Day against the Sherwood Park Dukes. They lost by a score of 6-4.
