The Western Canada AA Baseball Championships are underway at Legion Memorial Park. The St. Albert Minor Baseball Association is hosting the U18 midget, U15 bantam and U13 peewee tournaments The participating teams are as follows.

GUNNER – David Ross was firing bullets for the St. Albert Senior (30-plus) Cardinals against the Fort Saskatchewan A’s in the third and deciding game in the Alberta West Central Baseball Association semifinal. Ross tossed a two-hitter through five scoreless innings in the 8-2 victory at the Fort. The Cardinals will now host the first-place Westlock Red Lions in the best-of-three final. The series opener is Monday at 6:45 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

Midget AA: Olds Spitfires (Alberta), New Westminster Twins (B.C.), North East Red Sox (Sask.), Oak River Bearcats (Man.) and the host St. Albert Cardinals Red (Baseball Alberta midget AA Tier I champions).

Bantam AA: Camrose Cougars (Alberta), Coquitlam Moody Blues (B.C.), Humboldt Dodgers (Sask.), Portage Phillies (Man.) and the host St. Albert Cardinals (Baseball Alberta bantam AA Tier I qualifier).

Peewee AA: Okotoks Outlaws (Alberta), Coquitlam Moody Reds (B.C.), Swift Current Indians (Sask.), Stonewall Blue Jays (Man.) and the host St. Albert Cardinals Red (Baseball Alberta peewee AA Tier I semifinalists).

Today's game times, weather permitting, are 9 a.m., noon, 3 and 6 p.m. on the midget, bantam and peewee diamonds.

The round-robin draw wraps up Sunday and the finals are 6 p.m. for the midgets and bantams and 3 or 6 p.m. for the peewees.

The St. Albert Senior (30-plus) Cardinals have home-field advantage against the first-place Westlock Red Lions in the Alberta West Central Baseball Association final.

The best-of-three playoff starts Monday and game two goes Tuesday.

Game three, if needed, is Thursday.

The start times are 6:45 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

The third-place Cardinals (10-5-1) rallied to defeat the Fort Saskatchewan A's in the best-of-three semifinal.

After losing the series opener 5-2 on the road, the Cardinals rebounded with wins 5-1 in St. Albert and 8-2 in the Fort to complete the comeback.

David Ross pitched a scoreless five-inning gem of two-hit ball and Justin Watamaniuk picked up the save with two strong innings.

Joel Tauber provided a spark at the top of the lineup and Travis Parker and Nolan Thiessen also provided some big hits.

The Western Canada U18 midget AAA championship starts Thursday for the St. Albert Cardinals in Yorkton, Sask.

The Cardinals play the St. James A's (Man.) in the their round-round opener, followed by games against the Parkland Expos (Sask.), Parksville Royals (B.C.), North Winnipeg Pirates (Man.) and North West Pirates (Sask.).

Two years ago, the Cardinals won westerns in Winnipeg and last year they were the Baseball Canada silver medallists as the Baseball Alberta Tier I champions.

This year, the Cardinals lost the Tier I provincial final 12-8 to the Okotoks Black Dawgs in St. Albert despite leading 8-1 with six outs to go. A grand slam with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning ended the game.
