The playoffs start Monday for the St. Albert Tigers in the Sunburst Baseball League.
Game one in the best-of-three semifinal against the two-time defending provincial champion Fort Saskatchewan A’s starts at 6 p.m. in the Fort.
Game two goes Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.
Game three, if needed, will be played at the Fort, but the date and time was unavailable at press time.
The winner will challenge the first-place Red Deer Riggers (12-4) or the Parkland White Sox (7-9) in the best-of-five final.
In league play the A’s (11-5) finished second and the Tigers (7-9) tied for third place.
The teams split the four-game season series, with the Tigers winning twice in the Fort.
In last year’s semifinal the A’s rallied from an 8-7 loss to the Tigers in the series opener to win the next two games by scores of 19-1 and 11-1.
The season isn’t over for the midget AAA St. Albert Cardinals after their silver-medal performance at Tier I provincials last weekend in Okotoks.
The Cardinals will represent Alberta at westerns, Aug. 22 to 25 in Winnipeg.
At provincials the Cardinals finished 6-2 after losing Sunday’s final 11-10 to Okotoks Dawgs Red.
The Cardinals were ranked fifth and Dawgs Red were listed third in the 13-team draw.
In the semifinals the Cardinals edged the No. 2-ranked Okotoks Dawgs Black, last year’s national champion and the 2011 silver medallist, 5-4 and Dawgs Red defeated the No. 1-ranked Calgary Dinos 7-3.
The Cardinals played their best baseball of the season down the stretch, winning their last seven games in the Norwest league to finish 18-10 for sixth place before catching fire at provincials.
The bantam AAA Tier I provincials are underway for the St. Albert Cardinals in Okotoks.
The top five teams in league play are competing for berths at the national and western championships.
Okotoks Dawgs Black (30-3) finished first, followed by SEEBA (24-6), Spruce Grove White Sox (20-13), Sherwood Park A’s (19-12) and the Cardinals (17-15).
The Cardinals have only one player back from last year’s 39-12 team that placed third at provincials and reached the semifinals at westerns.
The top two peewee AAA teams in Alberta are on a collision course for the Tier I championship this weekend in Red Deer.
The Sherwood Park A’s (26-4) finished first and the Cardinals (26-7) placed second in the seven-team standings.
The Cardinals are 4-3 against the A’s going into the eight-team provincials.
The Cardinals are in pool B with the Red Deer Braves (15-15), Calgary Cubs (8-19) and SEEBA (4-19).
Pool A consists of the A’s, Spruce Grove White Sox (9-16), Fort McMurray Oil Giants (9-17) and East Central.
The St. Albert Red Cardinals were awarded silver medals at the mosquito AA Tier I provincials last weekend in Okotoks.
In the final the Cardinals lost 12-2 to Okotoks Orange.
The Cardinals started the four-team round robin with losses of 9-8 to Camrose Royal and 13-0 to Okotoks before beating Sherwood Park Gold 9-6.
In the semifinal the Cardinals won 9-4 over Camrose.
The Cardinals were 14-2 going into the tournament. Last year they repeated at provincials.
