Blasts from the past from the glory days of the senior AAA St. Albert Tigers are returning to the diamond next weekend at the Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball Championships.
The Capital Tiger Padres were formed to compete in the 35-plus division at the oldtimers nationals next weekend in St. Albert, Edmonton, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain and Sherwood Park.
Some of the former Tigers on the roster are Troy Brady, Joe Carr, Jordy Cleland, Cory and Brad Harsch, Derek Horne, Doug Fystro, Brad Kuhn, Brad Letain, Kurtus Millar, Danny Mikitka, Mark Randall, Luc Riopel, Reg Rivard and David Ross.
About 90 per cent of the players on the team won national championships when the Tigers were a powerhouse at the provincial level.
“Our roster looks great on paper, but us old men haven’t played in a while,” Millar said.
At the recent Tigers Baseball Association tournament the Padres lost 5-1 to the Tigers and pulled off a 3-1 win over Parkland White Sox, a Sunburst Baseball League team going to next month’s senior AAA nationals.
“We did not too bad against the Tigers. We should have won, but we left nine guys in scoring position. Our timing was a little off at the plate for some guys too,” Millar said.
The Padres play the Regina Drifters, Brampton (Ont.) Pioneers and Fort Saskatchewan A's in pool C.
