The Cardinals led 12-2 after the first inning, en route to the 16-10 victory. This weekend the Cardinals (4-1) play four games in Lethbridge.

Crude doubleheader

The St. Albert Crude host a junior B doubleheader today in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

Game times are 2:30 p.m. for the Tier I team against the Edmonton Warriors (2-2-1) and 5 p.m. for the Tier II team against the Lloydminster Xtreme (2-1) at Akinsdale Arena.

The Tier II Crude also plays the visiting Lakeland Heat (4-0-1) Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The Tier I Crude (1-2) is coming off Thursday’s 14-11 road win over the Sherwood Park Titans (1-2).

The Crude capitalized seven times on the power play and the first six goals were scored with the man advantage, including three in a row by Taylor Dion to get the visitors rolling in the first period.

The Titans struck twice shorthanded and popped in a pair on the power play.

The rest of the goal scores for the Crude were Dustin Herman with four, two by Brock McIntyre and singles from Kolby Nester, Jesse Ott, Guerin Nollski, Nathaniel Jackson and Jacob Fodchuk.

The last game for the Tier II Crude (1-5), a new team this year, was Wednesday’s 12-7 loss to the Edmonton Wizards (2-4) at Grand Trunk Arena.

After five games, Greyson Seibel was the top scorer for the Tier II Crude with seven goals and 10 points.

High school rugby

The Bellerose Bulldogs are howling in delight over Thursday’s hard-fought victory against the defending champions in metro Edmonton division one women’s rugby.

The Bev Facey Falcons, winners of six consecutive playoff banners, succumbed 15-10 to the undefeated Bulldogs at Pirates Rugby Club.

Facey, last year’s Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association Tier I finalist, is 3-2 (238 PF/71 PA) and the Bulldogs (199 PF/17 PA) are tied with the McNally Tigers (205 PF/65 PA) with four wins apiece in the seven-team table.

The Bulldogs scrum down Thursday against the Sturgeon Spirits (2-1, 112 PF/91 PA), last year’s division two champions and Tier 2 provincial bronze medallists, at 4:45 p.m. at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

In division two, the next women's match for the Paul Kane Blues (3-0, 93 PF/47 PA) is Tuesday against the Harry Ainlay Titans (1-0) at 4:45 p.m. at SARFC.

Upcoming for the Blues and the Bulldogs, last year’s Tier 1 provincial consolation winners, is the Gareth Jones Cup and it's tentatively slated for the second week in June.

Impact vs. Impact

Tuesday’s premier women’s match between the St. Albert Impact 1 and 2 teams kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at ESA Complex.

Impact 1 (Spaidal) edged Hearts United 1-0 this week and the second match of the season is Sunday against Victoria at 6 p.m. at ESA Complex.

Impact 2 (Bourbonnais/Brown) is 1-1 after stopping the Wind 3-1 this week and the next match is Sunday versus Hearts United at 12 noon at ESA South Complex.

Badminton masters

Members of the Red Willow Badminton Club of St. Albert showed off their strong skill set at the recent national masters in Vancouver.

Nancy Cyr, 80, was the silver medallist in female 75-plus doubles.

Garry Marler, 68, reached the semifinals in men’s 65-plus singles and lost out to the number two seed.

Wendy Jerome, 80, and Anne Emberly, 77, finished second in the consolation bracket in female 75-plus doubles.

Rosalynn Thompson, 67, and Barb Biggs, 60, were victorious in the consolation side of female 60-plus doubles.

More than 350 players participated at nationals.

The age division for masters begins at 30 and goes up in increments of five years. There is no qualification for the tournament.
