BUMP IT UP – Gaege Johnson, a libero with the Lorne Akins Gators, makes contact with the ball for the first-place team in the St. Albert Physical Education Council junior high standings. The last match for the Gators (7-0) before the boys' playoffs start Nov. 5 is Tuesday afternoon against the host Sir George Simpson Voyageurs (5-2). The SAPEC Tier I city final is Nov. 15 at 7:45 p.m. at Bellerose Composite High School. Last year the Gators lost the final in five sets to the William D. Cuts Crusaders.

Cross-country results

Christiane Bilodeau of the St. Albert Skyhawks finished the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association cross-country championships as the fourth-fastest U19 female last Saturday in Vermilion.

Bilodeau’s time was 21 minutes and 14 seconds on the 5,000-metre course.

The senior division consisted of 110 females and the average time was 26:21.

Rosie Bouchard of the Foothills Falcons of Okotoks placed first at 19:35, Olivia Cooper of the Strathcona Lords was the runner-up at 19:59 and Christina Esposito of the Western Canada Redhawks of Calgary placed third at 20:58.

Bilodeau qualified for the ASAA provincials with a fourth-place 24:33 result at the metro Edmonton zones Oct. 10 at Gold Bar Park.

Last year at provincials, Bilodeau was 40th in the intermediate U17 4,000m at 19:00 after going 11:24 for 21st place in the junior U16 3,000m in 2016.

The top 18 males and females at zones in the junior, intermediate and senior divisions qualified for provincials and the St. Albert runners finishing in the top 50 at Vermilion are as follows:

Junior U16 males, 4,000m (129 participants, 16:54 average time): Dawson De Sousa, Skyhawks, 43rd (15:57).

Junior U16 females, 4,000m (128 participants, 19:46 average time): Cassidy Sutherland, Paul Kane Blues, 34th (18:15).

Intermediate U17 males, 5,000m (123 participants, 20:45 average time): Benjamin Colliou, Skyhawks, 41st (19:52); Kaaden Ruman, Bellerose Bulldogs, 47th (19:59); Logan Clarke, Paul Kane, 50th (20:07).

Intermediate U17 females, 5,000m (123 participants, 25:56 average time): Isabelle Poulin, Paul Kane, 19th (22:14).

Senior U19 females, 5,000m: Lauren Murray, Paul Kane, 13th (23:08); Anwyn Neraasen, Paul Kane, 22nd (23:44).

Senior U19 males, 6,000m (110 participants, 25:42 average time): Braeden Galvin, Paul Kane, 39th (24:17).

Volleyball playoffs

The Bellerose Bulldogs are the underdogs when the metro Edmonton division two senior volleyball quarter-finals swing into action Monday.

The lady Bulldogs (5-6) visit the Archbishop Jordan Scots (11-0) at 5:30 p.m. and Bellerose (5-6) will challenge the host Lillian Osborne Legends (9-2) at 6:30 p.m. in the men’s playoffs.

In league play, the Bulldogs lost in four sets to the Scots on Sept. 26 and the Bellerose men, last year’s division two champions, dropped a five-set tussle to the Legends on Sept. 19.

The St. Albert Skyhawks are also in tough against the Jasper Place Rebels in Monday’s division one senior women’s quarter-finals. The first serve is 5 p.m. at Jasper Place.

The Rebels (11-0) defeated the Skyhawks (4-7) in four sets Sept. 26.

The Sturgeon Spirits are also in action in Monday’s quarter-finals against the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles for the division two senior women at 5 p.m. in Sherwood Park and the Millwoods Christian Royals for the division three men at 5:30 p.m. at Namao.

Sturgeon (10-1) lost in five sets to the Royals (4-7) Monday and the lady Spirits (6-5) also dropped a five-set decision to the Eagles (8-3) Wednesday.

Flyers at home

Sunday the St. Albert Flyers host the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Faceoff is 3:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The midget 15 Flyers (6-1-1) are winners of three in a row after scoring the equalizer with 14 seconds to play in the 3-3 tie with the Rangers (1-5-1) Oct. 14 at JRC Arena.

The third win without a loss on home ice for the Flyers was Wednesday’s 5-2 result against the Sherwood Park Squires (3-3).

Holden Selin’s two goals included a shorthanded effort and Ethan Sundar’s team-leading eighth goal was the game winner on the power play.

Sundar also added three assists for 16 points, second best in the AMMHL.

Payton McDonald-Corea’s power-play marker knotted it at one in the second period and Graeme Hampton’s shorthanded goal was deposited into an empty net.

Dylan Leslie picked up two assists as the Flyers jumped ahead of the PAC Saints (5-0-1) for first place in the north division.

Shots were 35-32 for the Flyers in support of netminder Carson Ironside (4-0-1, 2.20 GAA).

Lightning strikes

The atom AA St. Albert Lightning delivered a knockout punch at the Rumble in the Rockies last weekend in Jasper.

Scores were 7-2 against Confederation, 5-2 against the Sherwood Park Barons, 16-0 against Lake Bonavista of Calgary and 8-0 against the Leduc Roughnecks in the final of the eight-team tournament.

The point leaders were forwards Gavin Faul (16), Ty Meunier (15), Ben Chuckrey (five) and Carson Godlien (four) and defenceman Jeremy Mollenbeck (four).

Finn Werner and Parker Kulmatycki posted shutouts.

The Lightning are 4-0 in the first round of the Hockey Edmonton atom 1 division.
