Check out division one women's volleyball and division two Miles conference football in metro Edmonton high school sports and St. Albert Merchants

Volleyball match

The St. Albert Skyhawks and Paul Kane Blues swing into action tonight in division one women’s volleyball. The first serve is 6:30 p.m. at the SkyDome. The metro Edmonton volleyball season started Monday and scores were unavailable between the Skyhawks and Harry Ainlay Titans and the Strathcona Lords versus the Blues. Last year the Skyhawks (5-2) and Blues (2-5) competed in division one and at the 3A provincials the Skyhawks finished 2-4.

Football Friday

The Paul Kane Blues and St. Albert High Skyhawks huddle up in Friday’s doubleheader in division two Miles conference football at Larry Olexiuk Field. Kickoff times are 5 p.m. between the Blues (1-0) and Strathcona Lords (1-0), last year’s champions, and 7:30 p.m. between the Skyhawks (1-0), listed sixth in the Football Alberta Tier III (450 to 749 students) rankings, and the Archbishop Jordan Scots (0-1). The metro Edmonton high school season in the Miles opened last week and scores were 24-7 for the Blues against the O’Leary Spartans and 21-9 for the Skyhawks over the Ardrossan Bisons. The Blues and Skyhawks tangle next Friday at 5 p.m.

Junior B hockey

The puck drops Friday for the St. Albert Merchants and Morinville Jets in the Capital Junior B Hockey League. Faceoff is 8 p.m. between the CJHL rivals at Akinsdale Arena. Sunday the Jets host the North Edmonton Red Wings at 7:15 p.m. at Ray McDonald Sports Centre and the Merchants visit the CJHL champion Wetaskiwin Icemen at 6 p.m. Last season the Jets (27-7-4) finished first in the west division and the Merchants (18-16-4) placed fourth and in the playoffs the fifth-place Stony Plain Flyers (17-18-3) beat the Merchants twice in the best-of-three qualifying round and knocked off the Jets in the fifth and deciding game in the quarter-finals. The season opener in St. Albert features a tailgate party starting at 6 p.m. in support of the Little Warriors and Be Brave Ranch Treatment Facility. The Little Warriors is a national charitable organization committed to the awareness, prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse. The Original Joe’s community charity food truck will be onsite to feed fans for donations to the Little Warriors. The Merchants will also present a $1,000 cheque to SAIF (Stop Abuse in Families Society) to assist with youth counselling. The monies were raised through the second annual Merch Madness golf tournament.
