Norwest baseball

The St. Albert Cardinals are up to bat tonight in the Norwest Midget AAA Baseball League.

The first pitch is 6:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park between the Red Cardinals, coached by Cam Houston, and the Blue Cardinals, a new addition to the 15-team Norwest circuit.

Brad Wolansky of the St. Albert Tigers is coaching the Blue Cardinals.

Last year the Red Cardinals finished first in league play at 30-3 and 41-14 overall after the Tier I provincials in St. Albert.

The Red Cardinals bowed out in the semifinals to the Parkland Twins, the controversial provincial champions over the eligibility of two pitchers in the tournament with ties to the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball.

Crude lacrosse

Friday’s home debut for the St. Albert Crude is 8 p.m. Friday against the Fort Saskatchewan Rebels at Akinsdale Arena.

The junior B Tier I season opener for the Crude in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League was Sunday’s 8-7 loss to the Calgary Shamrocks.

Brock McIntyre, Taylor Dion and Jesse Ott tallied twice and Dustin Herman also scored as the Crude struck five times on the power play. McIntyre added four assists and Dion had three helpers.

The 15-team league is divided into four divisions and the Crude are grouped with the Rebels, Sherwood Park Titans and Edmonton Warriors in the north.

The second Crude team in the RMLL is 1-3 in the junior B Tier II ranks after Saturday’s 17-1 road loss to the Vermillion Rage (1-1).

The next game is Sunday versus the Edmonton Warriors (1-1) at 7:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Miners lacrosse

The St. Albert Miners travel to Blackfalds to play the host Silverbacks at 8 p.m. in Friday’s senior B match in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

The Presidents’ Cup national champions the last two years while going 57-2-1 overall won Saturday’s season opener 12-7 against the host Beaumont Outlaws.

Mike Triolo, a six-foot-eight newcomer from Scarborough, Ont., Richard Lachlin and the Cornfield brothers, Jordan and Graedon, led the way offensively in support of netminder Matt Hiebert.

Triolo was the third-highest scorer on the Victoria Shamrocks in points with 45 in the Western Lacrosse Association last year after receiving MVP honours in the Arena Lacrosse League with the Oshawa Outlaws with 30 goals and 70 points for second place in league scoring.

Meanwhile, the junior A Miners are in Saskatoon this weekend for two games against the Saskatchewan SWAT to kick off the season.

Last year’s Miners were 1-19 in the five-team RMLL division with a goals for/against mark of minus 174.
