Bulldogs win

The first victory of the season for the Bellerose Bulldogs after three losses was celebrated Thursday in Sherwood Park.

The Bulldogs defeated the winless Bev Facey Falcons 14-8 in the division one Carr conference match at Emerald Hills.

The result kept the Bulldogs in the playoff hunt for the sixth and final berth with games remaining against the Strathcona Lords (2-2) at 5 p.m. Friday at Foote Field and the Jasper Place Rebels (0-4) Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Night at Larry Olexiuk Field.

The metro Edmonton league playoffs start Oct. 26.

After three games before beating Facey (0-5), Brett Yost led the Bulldogs in rushing with 74 yards on 25 carries, Jordan Howe was the top receiver with 127 yards on eight catches and Jared Koziol was 35-for-75 passing for 310 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Defensively, Bronson Wilke recorded a team-high 18 tackles, followed by Pablo Rizzi-Benavides with 14, Cory Hannam had 13 and Cole Precht chipped in with 12 as well as one interception.

Red-hot Riders

The St. Albert Riders remain undefeated after another convincing victory in the Capital District Minor Football Association.

The peewee senior varsity Riders are averaging 47.6 points and only 4.3 against, including three shutouts in six wins, after sinking the Edmonton Seahawks 56-6 last weekend at Larry Olexiuk Field.

The halftime score was 30-0.

Both defences were stout early on as the first quarter ended 6-0 for the Riders when James Hill returned a punt 35 yards for the touchdown.

A late flag for an illegal block also brought back a 65-yard TD punt return by Hill.

The Riders started rolling offensively in the second quarter as Hill found slotback Braxton Turner wide open for a 16-yard scoring strike.

On the kick-off, the Riders recovered a fumble and four plays later Hill raced into the endzone from 15 yards out.

Josh Mah also crossed the goal line for a 30-yard major.

A 40-yard run through the heart of the Riders’ defence put the Seahawks (0-5) on the scoreboard and Jamie Clark answered back with a 70-yard kick return TD.

Mah added another rushing major in the third quarter and Hill scored twice in the fourth to finish with four TDs on the day.

Mah and Hill combined for more than 350 rushing yards.

Alex Brayden also split the posts for two-point conversions.

Jayden Teullie led the defence with a sack and two more tackles in the backfield.

The second-last game before the CDMFA Tier I playoffs in the Susan Morgan division for the Riders is against the Edmonton Mustangs (2-3) today at 9:30 a.m. at Johnny Bright Park.

Atom roundup

St. Albert’s four atom teams wound up on the losing end of Sunday’s scores in the Capital District Minor Football Association.

Results from Foote Field are as follows:

Division I: Despite a gritty effort, the Jaguars fell short to the undefeated Beaumont Bears 14-0.

Fletcher Weirmeir and Cashton Mattar stood tall defensively while a Theo Weirmeir to Crus Kennedy long bomb made it interesting in the fourth quarter but Kennedy was tackled just short of the endzone. The same combination hooked up a day earlier during the halftime show of the CFL game between the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Commonwealth Stadium and the play made the highlight reel on the Eskimos web page.

The next opponent for the Jags will be determined after the final re-tiering process takes place Monday.

Division II: The Buccaneers kept pace with the Rams but the Sherwood Park team cashed in on its chances in the 21-0 decision.

Kaeda Anderson and Dillon White, dual tailbacks, ran well to push the Bucs deep into Rams’ territory on two occasions but the team was unable to complete the drives.

The brother combo of Cameron and Lincoln Foster led the defensive charge.

On tap for the Bucs is a new opponent in the re-tiered division next week.

Division III: A tight one for the Vikings as they stuck with the Cougars all game only to have a late touchdown scored against them to seal the deal at 14-7 for the Spruce Grove team.

Issac Lorenzin, a new quarterback, was firing on all cylinders completing passes while leading the Vikings in rushing.

Cole Harrison was a force to lead the defence in tackles.

Monday’s re-tiering meeting will confirm who the Vikings play next.

Division IV: Quarterback Jesse Neale scored the lone touchdown for the Avengers and Karol Gonzolez de la Vega rattled off some solid runs in the 21-7 loss to the Edmonton Mustangs.

Defensively, Luka Schmidt and Madeline Neale did their best but couldn’t slow down the Mustangs.

Monday’s re-tiering meeting will confirm next week’s opposition for the Avengers.
