Bulldogs bury Facey
The Bellerose Bulldogs chewed up the Bev Facey Falcons with first place on the line in metro Edmonton division two men’s rugby.Despite a red card to captain Ben Miller early in the second quarter and a yellow card with eight minutes to play, the Bulldogs roared to victory by a score of 34-25 Monday at Pirates Rugby Club.
With only 13 men on the field, the Bulldogs out-scored Facey 12-5 to end the match.
Miller scored two tries before he was tossed over a dirty deed.
Adam Wilkins, Junior Manchester and Caleb Holt were also among the many Bulldogs to cross the try line.
Gabriel Forbes, a St. Albert Skyhawk and wrecking ball in the scrums, was the forwards’ man of the match and Holt was the backs’ man of the match at scrumhalf. Holt’s kick and chase for a try in the corner sealed the win.
The Bulldogs are 3-0 and Facey is 2-1 after the pool A tussle.
The crossover playoffs kick-off Wednesday as the Bulldogs tackle the St. Francis Xavier Rams (0-2) or Salisbury Sabres (1-2).
Meanwhile, the Paul Kane Blues are 1-2 after defeating the winless Sturgeon Spirits 27-20 in Monday’s pool A match at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
Paul Kane was coming off last week’s 25-10 loss to the Bulldogs for the Gareth Jones Cup.
Next weekend in playoff action, Paul Kane and Sturgeon, the defending champion, plays the J. Percy Page Panthers (2-1) or Jasper Place Rebels (2-0) on Wednesday or Thursday.
The semifinals are May 29 and the final is May 31 at 6:15 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
Division 1A Impact
The St. Albert Impact 4 (Murphy) found the back of the net six times in the first victory of the season for the division 1A women’s team in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.Brittany Kindzierski struck three times and singles were scored by Kelsey Diduck, Kelsey Carter and U17 call-up Holly Heron with her first women’s league goal in the 6-0 decision against the Edmonton Warriors (0-2-1) at Coronation Park.
Kathleen Lang posted the shutout.
The teams kicked-off the season in the 1-1 draw May 5.
The Impact (1-1-1) plays the Spruce Grove Saints (1-1) May 26 at 4 p.m. at Austin O’Brien High School.
Premier women
The St. Albert Impact premier women’s teams recorded mixed results in Sunday’s fixtures in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.Impact 1 (Spaidal) lost 5-1 to Victoria (3-0) at ESA Complex, Impact 2 (Bourbonnais/Brown) won 2-0 against Hearts United (1-2) at ESA South Complex and Impact 3 (Murphy) fell 4-0 to Sherwood Park Phoenix (1-2) at ESA Complex.
Tuesday’s scores between Impact 1 (1-1) and Impact 2 (2-1) as well as Impact 3 (0-3) versus the Wind (0-1) were unavailable at press time.
Impact 3 was scoreless in three matches prior to playing the Wind.
The next premier matches are Tuesday for Impact 1 against the host Angels Scottish SC (2-0), Impact 2 against Rionero FC (0-2) at ESA Complex and Impact 3 visits Victoria. Kickoff times are 7 p.m.
Rangers stymied
The St. Albert Rangers are regrouping after losing two division 1A men's matches in three days in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.Scores were 4-1 to Sherwood Park Karpaty (1-1) at ESA Complex and 3-0 to FC Al-ikhwan/Strikers HPP2 (2-1) at Eastglen High School.
Sam Godfrey scored against Karpaty on a splendidly taken free kick from a little outside the 18-yard box.
The Rangers also had other chances but couldn’t make them count Saturday.
Monday the Rangers were sloppy maintaining possession and didn’t test the Strikers HPP2 goalkeeper at all.
