Boston Marathon
Among the 25,746 finishers at the 122nd Boston Marathon were two St. Albert runners.Karen Dwyer was the 6,230th female and Andrew Smith was the 10,290th male to complete the windy, rainy and chilly race Monday on Patriots’ Day.
Dwyer’s time was four hours, one minute and two seconds for 16,071st overall.
Dwyer, 51, also placed 433rd out of 1,203 females in the 50 to 54 division.
Smith was clocked at 4:07:17 for 17,196th overall.
Smith, 68, ranked 110th out of 450 males in the 65 to 69 division
The total number of finishers were 14,142 males and 11,604 females.
Rugby matches
Metro Edmonton high school rugby kicks off next week for the Bellerose Bulldogs, Paul Kane Blues and Sturgeon Spirits.Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. at the Pirates Rugby Club, Bellerose scrums down against the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds in women’s division one and Paul Kane tackles the O’Leary Spartans in women's division two.
In the men’s division two pool A fixtures, Sturgeon plays the Salisbury Sabres on Wednesday and Paul Kane lines up against the Bev Facey Falcons on Thursday. Start times are 4:45 p.m. at the Pirates.
Thursday’s division one women’s match between Sturgeon and the McNally Tigers kicks off at 4:45 p.m. at Clareview Turf Field.
Last year’s Sturgeon men’s and women’s teams finished 7-0 in league play as the division two champions and at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association Tier 2 provincials the women won bronze and the men finished fourth.
The last time Sturgeon swept the metro rugby finals was 2011 in the premier conference before the merger of the metro and Edmonton public leagues.
Paul Kane was the runner-up to Sturgeon in the division two women’s final by a score of 34-5.
At Tier 1 provincials, Bellerose was crowned the women’s consolation champion.
The Bellerose lineup of Bulldogs and St. Albert Skyhawks also lost the division one semifinal 19-10 to Facey, winner of six consecutive division one banners and last year’s provincial silver medallist.
Senior Bowl
The 42-man north all-star team was finalized last weekend with three St. Albert players selected for the 29th annual Senior Bowl.Offensive lineman James Suranyi and linebacker Matt Coogan of the Bellerose Bulldogs, the 2017 division one Carr conference and Tier I north finalists, and kicker/punter Koen Klinge of the St. Albert High Skyhawks, last year’s division two Miles conference semifinalists and Tier III north finalists, will huddle up in the May 21 high school football all-star game at Foote Field.
