An undefeated season in metro Edmonton basketball for Paul Kane’s junior teams is at stake this weekend at Jasper Place High School.
Today at 11 a.m. the lady Blues (8-0) play the Archbishop Jordan Scots (7-0) in the division two final.
Friday’s score from the division two men’s final between the Blues (11-0) and Spruce Grove Panthers (10-1) was unavailable at press time.
In the last game before the playoffs to determine first place in the men’s pool B the Blues beat the Panthers 64-48 in Spruce Grove.
The Blues were also the top women’s team in pool B.
In Wednesday’s semifinals at Paul Kane the Blues posted wins of 50-30 against the Ardrossan Bisons (5-3) in the women’s bracket and 71-41 against the Memorial Marauders (8-3) in the men’s bracket.
The last metro championships for Paul Kane in junior hoops was 2010 for the women and 2011 for the men in the premier conference.
The St. Albert Skyhawks are shooting for a three-peat in the metro Edmonton’s top junior women’s basketball division today against the Harry Ainlay Titans.
The division one final tips off at 1 p.m. at Jasper Place High School.
Both teams are 11-1 and head-to-head the Skyhawks are 2-1 against the Titans, with victories in the final at the St. Albert High tournament and the semifinals at the 32nd REB Invitational at Jasper Place. The only loss was 54-52 in league play last month at Harry Ainlay. The Skyhawks were missing three players and only had seven in the lineup.
The Skyhawks advanced to the final in Thursday’s 51-31 semifinal win over the Edmonton Christian Lions (6-6) at the SkyDome. Carly Zimmer scored a team-high 20 points, Maddy Killoh drained 18 and Nicole Harrison turned in a strong defensive effort for the Skyhawks, winners of three out of four tournaments this season.
Four Skyhawks are back from last year’s premier conference championship team.
The St. Albert Skyhawks and Holy Trinity Trojans hooped it up for metro Edmonton division two men’s honours Friday at Jasper Place High School.
The score was unavailable at press time between the Skyhawks (9-2) and Trojans (10-0).
The Skyhawks placed third in pool B and the Trojans finished on top of pool A.
The Skyhawks marched into the final after Thursday’s 72-68 semifinal win against the pool B Millwoods Christian Royals (6-5) at the SkyDome. Dayn Scaber tossed in 24 points and Jordan Morrison added 19.
The last metro championship for the men’s team was 2002 in the city conference.
Next week the Skyhawks tip-off the 3A Edmonton zone elimination tournament to determine the two teams for the March 20 to 22 provincials at Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge.
The Skyhawks, a 3A honourable mention, are seeded third in the eight team double-knockout draw. Tuesday they host the sixth-seeded St. Joseph Saints at 5 p.m.
The finals are Thursday in the A bracket and 11 a.m. Saturday in the B bracket.
Last year at zones the Skyhawks lost both the A and B finals.
The Skyhawks’ last trip to provincials was 2012 and they placed fifth overall.
