Baseball updates: NCABL all-star game, bantam AA Tier V provincials and Tigers at home

NCABL all-stars

The North Central Alberta Baseball League all-star game tonight at Remax Field features five St. Albert Cardinals.

Hayden Chies and Tanner McLean-Poll were among 10 players voted to the NCABL's 2018 All-Star Club.

Chies outpolled all outfielders and in the first half of the season patrolled centre field without a single error while batting .463.

McLean-Poll's 32 strikeouts lead the league while posting a mid-season 1.63 ERA.

Nic Arlia, an infielder, and pitcher Brendan Larsen were also selected and head coach Jason Enright is part of the coaching staff for the visiting team's lineup of all-stars from the Cardinals (10-8), Stony Plain Mets (12-4-1), Edmonton Athletics (6-11) and Sturgeon Paladins (0-18).

Players from the Sherwood Park Athletics (13-3), Edmonton Blackhawks (12-6-1), Westlock Red Lions (11-7) and Edmonton Primeaus (6-13) form the home all-star team.

The first pitch is 6:55 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and there is no charge for preschoolers.

Meanwhile, the fifth-place Cardinals were winless in three games before hosting the Edmonton Athletics but Tuesday’s score was unavailable at press time.

The second-last-game in the regular season is Tuesday against Westlock at 7:15 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

The top four teams qualify for the Aug. 18-19 semifinals in Westlock.

Bantam AA Tier V

The Baseball Alberta bantam AA Tier V provincials start at 3 p.m. Friday at Legion Memorial Park.

The St. Albert Blue Cardinals and the Coronation Royals face off in pool B, followed by the opening ceremonies at 6 p.m.

The Cardinals also play at 9 a.m. Saturday against the Calgary Grizzlies.

The pool A teams are the Hanna Hornets, Sylvan Lake Mariners and Lakeland Northstars.

If there are no tiebreakers Sunday, the consolation game is 9 a.m., the semifinals are 12 and 3 p.m., and the final is 6 p.m.

Tigers at home

The St. Albert Tigers resume league play after a three-week break in the senior AAA Sunburst baseball circuit Friday at Legion Memorial Park.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. against the Confederation Park Cubs (9-2).

The Tigers (3-9) have lost six in a row and three setbacks were against the first-place Cubs by scores of 15-14, 9-7 and 8-7.
