Bantam games

Two games remain for St. Albert’s bantam teams in the Capital District Minor Football Association.

The senior varsity Palmer 49ers (3-1-1) huddle up in the Susan Morgan division against the host Leduc Wildcats (5-0) today at 2:30 p.m. and the Edmonton Raiders (1-4) Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at Johnny Bright Park.

Last year’s 49ers were the CDMFA Tier I playoff finalists.

The junior varsity Fury (1-4) of the Marv Mills division plays at Larry Olexiuk Field on Sunday against the Camrose Buffaloes (4-1) at 3:30 p.m. and Oct. 21 against the Sherwood Park Northstars (4-1) at 10 a.m.

Riders rocking

Today’s peewee game is shaping up to be a playoff preview between the St. Albert Riders and Leduc Wildcats.

The senior varsity Riders (7-0, 336 PF/34 PA) and Wildcats (4-2, 121 PF/125 Pa) are first and fourth, respectively, in the Susan Morgan division in the last game before the Tier I semifinals in the Capital District Minor Football Association playoffs.

Kickoff is 12 noon at John Bole Athletic Park in Leduc.

The latest win for the Riders was 50-8 over the Edmonton Mustangs (2-4) last weekend at Johnny Bright Park.

On the first play from scrimmage, James Hill’s 70-yard touchdown run was called back for blocking behind the play.

Three plays later, Josh Mah scored from two yards out.

Hill, the team's quarterback, would call his own number for TDs of 34, 15 and 17 yards in the first half.

Mah added an eight-yard rushing major and was on the receiving end of Hill’s 30-yard TD pass before halftime.

Alex Brayden converted three TDs to make it 42-0 at the break.

In the second half, the Mustangs busted loose with a 50-plus yard TD run and conversion.

The Riders answered with Luke Bates at quarterback as several players switched positions. Bates hit Hill for a 19-yard reception to set up first and go as Matty LaPierre capped off the drive with a one-yard TD up the middle. Brayden converted the score.

The defence stayed stout in the fourth quarter as Jayden Tieulie and Braxton Turner led the charge.

Hill finished 5-for-11 passing for 87 yards and gained 131 yards on nine carries.

Mah rushed for 95 yards on seven handoffs and Jamie Clark added 42 yards on six runs.

Brayden caught three passes for 29 yards and Mah grabbed a pair for 41 yards.

Atom roundup

Last weekend’s results for St. Albert’s atom teams after the re-tiering of divisions in the Capital District Minor Football Association are as follows:

Division I: The Jaguars halted a three-game losing skid in the 14-14 tie with the West Edmonton Raiders.

Down 7-0 at halftime, the Jags pulled even at seven apiece with a 35-yard run by William Imgrund-Peterson in the third quarter only to see the Raiders come back on the next series to regain the lead.

The Jags continued to battle hard as Fletcher Weirmeir and Cruz Kennedy led the defence in shutting down the Raiders while Bohe O’Donnell-Nyal punched the ball over from three-yards out on the second-last play of the game.

Sunday the Jags line up against the Edmonton Chargers at 1 p.m. at Foote Field.

Division II: The second go-round against the bigger Spruce Grove Cougars ended with the Buccaneers losing 28-0.

The bright spot was the diminutive Dillon White who attacked his much larger opponents on both sides of the ball with ferocity not seen on the Bucs so far this year. White’s play kept the score from getting out of hand on defence while adding decent rushing yards on offence.

Orion Scott also contributed as a two-way player.

On tap Sunday are the West Edmonton Raiders at 2:30 p.m. at Foote Field.

Division III: Julian Ammar scored twice and Zach Chartrand-Gratton also found the end zone in the 21-14 win for the Vikings against the Leduc Bobcats.

Defensively, Gavin Frank played hurt while stonewalling the Bobcats.

The Vikings and Camrose Buffaloes huddle up at 4 p.m. Sunday at Foote Field.

Division IV: The Avengers settled for a 21-21 draw with Wetaskiwin Gold.

Jesse Neale at quarterback and key blocks by Cole Wallace led the Avengers to three touchdowns.

On defence, Kade Shillabeer and Ayton Maki held the Gold in check to preserve the tie.

Up next for the Avengers are the Stony Plain Bombers at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Foote Field.
