Badminton tournament, curling bonspiel and midget AA and bantam AAA hockey On Tap this weekend in St. Albert

Badminton action

The David Folinsbee Memorial Tournament is underway at the Red Willow Badminton Club. The mixed, men’s and women’s doubles format consists of 97 players ranging in age from 20 to 70. The participants hale from throughout Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan. The tournament wraps up Sunday around noon. Folinsbee and his wife, Jean, were inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of fame in 2015 as recipients of the Pioneer Award, which is presented to individuals who have distinguished themselves as competitors, coaches and administrators at the provincial, national and internationals levels in their sport. The Folinsbees moved to St. Albert in 1980 and eight years later opened the Red Willow facility. Folinsbee died on July 1, 2016 at the age of 84 from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Ladies bonspiel

The annual ladies’ bonspiel is rocking the house at the St. Albert Curling Club. Sunday’s finals in the 20-rink draw start at 3 p.m. This year’s theme is I am Canadian. The last St. Albert ladies’ bonspiel was staged in February and consisted of 16 rinks. The winner was Lauren Jenkyns by as score of 5-3 against the U18 Alberta Pandas, skipped by Abby Marks of St. Albert. Both rinks also competed in the final of the Edmonton and area Tournament of Champions in April and Jenkyns prevailed 6-5.

Midget AA game

The next game for the St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders is Sunday in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League. Faceoff is 2:30 p.m. between the Crusaders (5-2-2), the 2017 league finalists, and Lakeland Panthers (2-4) at Akinsdale Arena. The last game for the Crusaders was Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Canadian Athletic Club (5-0-3) at Callingwood Recreation Centre. Kobe Belyea, Zach Giacobbo and Ryan Deets scored and Spencer Hutson (2-1-2, 2.72 GAA) faced 26 shots.

Sabres update

The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres skate on consecutive nights next week in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. The Sabres (7-2-2) host the Sherwood Park Flyers (5-5) Monday at 6:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena and Tuesday’s face-off is 8 p.m. against the SSAC Southgate Lions (4-5-2) at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre. The Sabres are 3-1-1 in their last five games and 2-1-2 on home ice. Meanwhile, the 40th annual John Reid Memorial Tournament, hosted by the Sabres and St. Albert Raiders Hockey Club, is Jan. 18 to 21 and the 16-team lineup will finalized in mid to late November.
