AMHL Showcase
The Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League Showcase Weekend returns to St. Albert for the second year in a row.Servus Credit Union Place is the venue for 18 games involving all 18 AMHL teams during the sixth annual display of talent.
Proceeds from the event, hosted by the St. Albert Raiders Hockey Club, supports the AMHL scholarship program.
The first game is 8 p.m. Friday between the Southside Athletic Club (4-5) and Maple Leafs (0-10) and the last game is 4:15 p.m. Sunday between the St. Albert Nektar Data Systems Raiders (4-4-2) and Calgary Flames (2-7-1) at Go Auto Arena.
The Raiders also play the Calgary Buffaloes (7-3) at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at Go Auto Arena.
The Raiders are 0-3-2 in the last five games and 1-3-2 against south division teams after losses of 4-2 to the Royals (7-3) and 4-0 to the Northstars (6-3-1) last weekend in Calgary.
The Raiders led 2-1 after two periods against the Royals on goals by Tyson Greenway and Jaxon Dube.
Down by two, the Royals struck on the power play with 2:50 left in the second and the team’s last goal of the game was an empty-netter.
Shots were 31-29 for the Raiders with Evan Fradette in net.
Fradette (0-2-1, 2.98 GAA) also stopped a game-high 36 shots against the Northstars while a depleted lineup of Raiders registered 22 in the shutout loss.
The Northstars made it 3-0 on the power play with 30 seconds left in the second.
The Raiders are now 2-4 on the road.
Slash stopped
The second loss of the season for St. Albert Slash was against the Lloydminster Steelers in the Alberta Female Hockey League.Sunday’s setback in the Border City also marked the third game in a row for the Esso Cup midget AAA national champions last weekend.
The Slash (7-1-1) posted home-ice wins of 6-1 and 2-0 against the Rocky Mountain Raiders (1-7) before falling 2-1 in overtime to the Steelers (6-3).
Jaden Bogden knotted the score at 1-1 at 11:39 of the third period after the Steelers opened the scoring with a penalty shot at 18:06 of the second.
Brianna Sank (3-1, 1.00 GAA) faced 31 shots and Bella McKee stopped 37 by the Slash.
McKee, the 2018 MVP in the AFHL, was also tested 35 times in the 2-0 win by the Steelers in the Slash home opener Oct. 13.
Madison Willan, Jenna Goodwin and Bogden recorded one goal and two assists apiece in the first game against the Raiders.
Bronwyn Boucher, Mackenzie Kordic and Dayle Ross also scored as the Slash outshot the Raiders 43-14 with Sank in net.
In the rematch, Holly Borrett (4-0, 0.75 GAA) turned aside 18 shots for her second shutout and the team’s fourth of the season.
Kordic and Ross notched singles and Makenna Schuttler added two assists while the Slash were credited with 29 shots.
The Slash and Raiders face off again Saturday at 4:45 p.m. in DeWinton.
Merchants falling
The St. Albert Merchants are winless in four games after dropping a pair last weekend in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.The sixth loss in the last seven games was Sunday’s 5-2 outcome against the Sherwood Park Knights (8-3-1) at Akinsdale Arena.
The Merchants (4-8) were coming off their worst defeat of the season, 9-3 against the host Beaumont Chiefs (9-1) Friday.
The top south division team posted period leads of 2-1 and 4-2, capitalizing three times on the power play, and outshot the Merchants 20-7 in the third period and 45-26 overall.
Peter Corrigan potted the first of his two goals on the man advantage and Marco Runco also scored.
Colton Iwaschuk (six GA on 27 shots in 47 minutes) and Brandon Boughen (three GA on 18 shots in 13 minutes) split time in net.
Boughen (five GA on 21 shots in 27 minutes) and Iwaschuk (18 saves in 33 minutes) also shared netminding duties against the Knights.
The Merchants trailed 3-1 after the first and 5-1 entering the third.
Cole Gupta and Ryan Cooper scored as the Merchants registered 38 shots.
The Merchants, ranked fifth out of seven teams in the north standings, skate Friday against the Riggers (4-7-1) in Leduc and Sunday against the visiting Spruce Grove Regals (1-11). Start times are 8 p.m.
Junior B Jets
Tonight the Morinville Jets face off against the north division leaders in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.Puck drop is 8 p.m. against the North Edmonton Red Wings (10-0) at Londonderry Arena.
The Jets (2-7-1) are 0-4-1 in the last five games after Sunday’s 6-4 loss to the Edmonton Mustangs (8-3-1) at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
Lee Gadoury, Jaron Coles and Brett Dubuc lit the lamp in period two as the Mustangs led 5-3 after 40 minutes.
Zach Mcrae scored early in the third and the Mustangs wrapped up the win with an empty-net goal.
Shots were 14-8 Jets in the third and 34-33 overall for the Mustangs. Luke Hall 2-3, 4.20 GAA) was tabbed with the loss.
Friday the Jets host the Beverly Warriors (8-4) at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday’s start time against the Strathcona Bruins (1-10) is 3:30 p.m. at Strathcona Olympiette Centre.
Midget 15 Flyers
Thursday the St. Albert Flyers and SSAC Bulldogs go head-to-head in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.
Three points separate the midget 15 Flyers (6-1-1) and SSAC (4-2-2) in the north division standings.
The last game for the Flyers, co-leaders in the north with the PAC Saints (6-1-1), was Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (1-5-1) at Akinsdale Arena.
Scoring stats were unavailable at press time.
Saturday the Flyers host CRAA Blue (3-3), a south division team, at 8 p.m.
Sharks attack
The St. Albert Sharks are off to a strong start with three wins in four games in the Alberta Female Hockey League.Last weekend’s results for the midget elite team were 8-2 against the North Central Impact (1-1-1) in Leduc and 2-0 against the Lloydminster Steelers (0-4) in the Border City.
Katie Charko paced the attack against the Impact with three goals and Kylie Foisy added three assists.
Jaden Leung, Marissa Steinke, Kirsten Legge, Aidan Soltis and Annika Neset (power play) also scored and Libby Langenhahn, Julianna Giacobbo, Mia Ewashko and Regan Ackroyd chipped in with a pair of assists.
The Sharks outshot the Impact 49-11 in support of netminder Layla Hood (2-0, 1.00 GAA).
Laney Pasemko (1-1, 2.02 GAA) recorded the team’s first shutout of the season with 11 saves against the Steelers.
The Sharks piled up 41 shots as Langenhahn and Foisey capitalized with the man advantage in the third period and Legge assisted on both goals.
Thursday the Sharks host the Edmonton Pandas (0-1-1) at 8:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The Sharks are in Sherwood Park on Saturday to play the Fury (2-0-2) at 12:30 p.m.
The Fury doubled the Sharks 4-2 Oct. 21 in St. Albert.
Lady Raiders win
Ella Soltis scored the only goal in the first win of the season for the bantam elite St. Albert Raiders in the Alberta Female Hockey league.Kali MacDonald assisted on the first-period tally in the 1-0 decision against the North Central Impact (3-1) Sunday in Leduc.
The Impact peppered Natalie Balog with 32 shots while the Raiders put 15 pucks on net.
The third loss in a row to start the season was 5-0 against the Edmonton Pandas (2-1-1) in Saturday’s home opener at Go Auto Arena.
Three of the goals were power-play markers against Balog, who faced 37 shots, while the Raiders generated 19 shots.
The Raiders travel this weekend to play the Lethbridge Coyotes (0-4) Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Rocky Mountain Raiders (0-1-1) Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in Okotoks.
