Miners advance

The St. Albert Miners are three wins away from a provincial three-peat after sweeping the Edmonton Warriors in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League senior B semifinals.

The back-to-back winners of the Presidents’ Cup national championship posted victories of 17-5 and 14-1 at Go Auto Arena and 14-3 in Fort Saskatchewan against the fourth-place Warriors (9-7-2).

The Miners (16-1-1) will play the Rockyview Knights (13-5) of Airdrie or the Calgary Mountaineers (11-7) for the right to represent Alberta at nationals, Aug. 26 to Sept. 2 in Nanaimo, B.C.

The fifth consecutive provincial final and the eighth in nine years for the Miners is expected to start in early August.

Last year’s nationals was the third in four years and the fifth since 2010 for the Miners, the first team to repeat since the 2011-12 St. Regis Braves of the Three Nations Senior Lacrosse League.

The last senior B team to win three nationals in a row was the 1986-88 Fergus (Ont.) Thistles.

In league play, Richard Lachlan led all scorers with 51 goals and 103 points in 16 games, followed by Mike Triolo, a newcomer to the Miners, with 50 goals and 99 points in 17 games.

Keegan Bal and Graedon Cornfield placed eighth and ninth, respectively, with 62 and 61 points.

Cornfield pumped in 36 goals and Bal netted 23.

Last year, Bal recorded 49 goals and a league-high 123 points in 16 games and Lachlan racked up 62 goals as the top scorer and 90 points in 14 games.

The Miners are a near-perfect 76-3-2 in regular season, playoffs and nationals since losing to Rockyview in the 2015 provincial final.
