The sixth annual Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts Gala is a once-a-year opportunity to rub elbows with some of St. Albert’s most accomplished artists.
The informal event, held Friday, March 20 at the Arden Theatre, is more than an awards ceremony. It is a moving tribute to the city’s arts and entertainment sector.
However, the celebration of the arts awards committee needs residents to nominate and salute these leaders.
“St. Albert is well-known across the country for supporting arts and culture,” said Kelly Jerrott, director of cultural services.
“Artists do their thing day-after-day improving our community or working quietly on a craft. It’s important to celebrate some of the achievements made in the cultural sector. It’s important to recognize those in the spotlight as well as those who are not quite in the centre of the spotlight.”
Nominations are now open in eight categories: emerging artist, youth artist, excellence in arts teaching, established artist, community arts group, arts leadership, corporate patron of the arts and lifetime achievement in the arts.
“Certainly the calibre of our artists has grown to a new level and this helps with the development of culture. The participation from the younger audience and community support brings people from different backgrounds involved and that’s what culture means to the community.”
Award recipients will receive an original piece of art by a St. Albert artist. All recipients, with the exception of corporate patron of the arts, receive $1,000.
Nominations can be submitted by email, in person or by postal mail. Nomination deadline is Friday, Nov. 28.
