The St. Albert Curling Club is encouraging residents to get in shape and focus on wellness with the 2012 Health and Wellness Summer Showcase.
The showcase runs every Saturday in July and August from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature a variety of retail vendors, fitness clubs and recreational groups, each promoting health and wellness.
“We wanted to come up with a theme to cultivate life here in St. Albert and to enhance the downtown while providing something for the citizens of the community,” said Lynda Holden, general manager of the St. Albert Curling Club.
The showcase takes place indoors at the curling club arena and is free to attend.
This is the first year for the showcase and Holden said she hopes it can take off and capitalize on the traffic from the St. Albert Farmers’ Market.
“We hope the same traffic that comes [to] downtown St. Albert to the farmers’ market will stop in to the 2012 Health and Wellness Summer Showcase and check out our vendors,” she said. “It’s just a way to enhance the market we already have downtown and the activities we do in St. Albert on Saturdays.”
She said vendors will include anything from supplement companies selling their products and providing information, cancer survivors sharing their stories and local fitness studios providing demonstrations.
Different demonstrations will take place each day, starting with Dynamyx Gymnastics Club.
Kim Farrell, executive director of Dynamyx Gymnastics Club, said the showcase is a great way for the club to show the community what it does.
“We thought it was a great promotion to get kids and parents aware of what we have at our facility in our different seasons,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for us to get our name out there.”
The non-profit club will provide information and demonstrations on July 7 and plans to have a booth for one Saturday in August as well.
“I think it’s great because I think St. Albert has a lot to offer and it basically makes people aware what other activities are available for all ages and fitness types,” she said.
Holden said the organizing committee still welcomes vendors and fitness providers to register for booths.
Vendors can sign up for the full eight weeks or select specific dates. The cost for vendors is $60 per day or $400 for the full eight weeks.
