Two people were killed and four others were injured in a horrific head-on collision Sunday night east of Morinville.
The crash took place on Highway 28 around 5 p.m. between Cardiff Road and secondary highway 642.
A silver minivan was travelling north, while a green sedan was heading south — both at highway speeds.
The investigation is still in progress but police have not yet determined the cause of the accident. The collision occurred in the northbound lanes, which leads police to believe the sedan crossed the centre line.
The drivers of both vehicles survived the crash, however two Edmonton men — a 34-year-old who was a passenger in the van and a 27-year-old in the sedan — were both pronounced dead at the scene.
STARS air ambulance was called in to transport one of the remaining victims to hospital, while three others were transported via ground ambulance.
Both vehicles suffered extensive damage and Hwy. 28 was closed for several hours while investigators from Morinville and a collision analyst investigated the wreck.
Sgt. Chris Narbonne with the Morinville RCMP said the details of the crash are still being investigated and no decision has been made on charges. The investigation is still in its early stages, he said.
The road was dry and the sun was shining at the time of the crash but police do not believe that had any role in the collision.
Narbonne said that particular location doesn’t have a lengthy history of accidents.
During the investigation everything will be considered as a possible cause and at this point that includes drugs and alcohol, he said.
“Our investigation is ongoing and we will be looking at all factors that could have contributed to the crash including alcohol and speed.”
The RCMP is not releasing the names of the deceased.
