Morinville RCMP are investigating a fatal collision early Thursday morning where a pick-up truck collided with a trailer hauling nitrogen gas and burst into flames.

The collision took place on Highway 28, near township Road 564 in Sturgeon County, just before 7 a.m. Nov. 25. In a press release sent out Thursday evening, RCMP said both occupants of the pick-up truck were pronounced dead at the scene. At this time, the pair has not been identified. Once known, the names of the deceased will not be released, the statement said.

Morinville RCMP said the semi-tractor trailer driver was not injured.

In addition to emergency medical services and the Sturgeon County Fire Department, Environment Canada arrived at the scene to co-ordinate the cleanup of the nitrogen gas tanker, the release said. The road is now reopened.

While the investigation is ongoing, icy road conditions are "believed to be a contributing factor" in the collision, RCMP said in the statement.
