Travis Vader was arrested over the weekend and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of St. Albert couple Lyle and Marie McCann.
Vader, 40, was the only suspect identified by RCMP in the couple’s disappearance nearly two years ago. He was arrested at the Edmonton Remand Centre, where he was being held on unrelated charges.
The McCanns were last seen on July 3, 2010 when they departed St. Albert for a vacation to British Columbia. They failed to reach their destination on July 10 and family members reported the couple missing.
The burned-out frame of their motorhome was found near Edson on July 5, while the SUV they were towing was found a few weeks later.
“Understandably, the public has many questions about what happened to the McCanns,” said RCMP K Division Staff Sgt. Shawn LeMay in a news release Monday. “Those questions will be answered in court.”
The major crimes unit from K Division led the 22-month investigation. RCMP said they are not providing further comments on the case as the court process is ongoing, although a news conference with family members is scheduled for later today.
Vader’s first court appearance is slated for May 15 in Edson.
