As they get nearer to the Rooftop Campout in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada, St. Albert firefighters have a few fun ways to gear up their fundraising efforts to bring in $45,000 while they’re still on the ground.
This weekend, a team of hearty and warmly dressed firefighters will be stationed at the north location of Save-On Foods for what they lovingly call the Boot Drive.
“We’re excited for the weekend. We have lots of volunteers coming out and we’re at our new location being Save-On. Chris the manager there is thrilled to have us. He thinks his customers are going to be thrilled to see us at his location and we’re just happy to be able to give back,” said Kathi Sheedy, one of the spokespeople for the campaign.
Grocery shoppers and members of the public can shake the hands with the crew members and drop some monetary donations in the boot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at the store located at 740 St. Albert Trail.
As always, they will also be selling tickets ($5 each) for a gift basket prize. They also have special Muscular Dystrophy/St. Albert Fire Services T-shirts available for $20.
Next Thursday, diners at East Side Mario’s Restaurant will get the special treat of having firefighters moonlighting as servers take their orders between 5 and 9 p.m. Their tips from the evening go to the campaign. The restaurant is located at 615 St. Albert Trail.
People should also check out their new website at www.firefightersformd.com, especially because an online auction is already underway.
“We’ve got 85 plus prizes right on the website. I want to say we’re already over $4,500 in fundraising from that. It’s a win and businesses are continually giving us items to donate, so we keep updating it.”
The auction ends on Friday, March 15, at 4 p.m. The campout itself runs from March 11 to 14 at Fire Station #2 next to the RCMP detachment on Boudreau Road.
Sheedy says it’s an excellent cause made even more relevant due to the fact the money will go to help people with MD right here in St. Albert and Sturgeon County.
