An aggressive driver who hit another vehicle, which started on fire after it careened into a streetlight, has come forward to St. Albert RCMP.

The incident happened last Thursday evening on Villeneuve Road at the traffic circle adjacent to Walmart.

The driver of a black, 2015-2020 GMC Sierra quad cab pick-up truck rear-ended a red SUV, causing the victim to drive off the road and hit the light. The victim's car started on fire and was damaged beyond repair, according to St. Albert RCMP.

The driver fled the scene. He contacted police last week, shortly after the St. Albert RCMP detachment issued a news release that asked for the public’s help identifying him and shared a photo of his truck.

He came to the St. Albert RCMP detachment in person earlier this week to turn himself in, according to Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

“The suspect has been released with charges pending,” says an RCMP press release issued on Wednesday.

The suspect cannot be named until charges against him are laid formally.

Tina Tyler was shopping at Walmart when the vehicles collided.

“I thought, ‘Oh, thunder?’” she said. “It didn’t look like rain …  perhaps a minute later, there was a big kaboom! … That was extremely loud.”

“I went to the garden [section] windows. You could clearly see flames … and then the smoke billowing up.”
