Sturgeon Valley Golf Course hosts club championships

Golfers decide five separate titles during three-day event

The Sturgeon Valley Golf and Country Club hosted 135 golfers last weekend for its annual club championship tournaments.

It was the first time the club hosted both men's and women's tournaments in the same weekend. From July 26 to July 28, the course hosted a total of five separate club championships.

The men's tournament was the only one that played all three days from Friday to Sunday. It was known as a "championship flight" and consisted of 28 golfers with a handicap of five or lower. Evan Matty won for the second year in a row, with a final score of 14 under par.

The women's tournament went on Saturday and Sunday, and avoided the wind and rain that happened Friday. Sandra Fischer took the championship, with a two-day score of 154. Fischer has now won the women's club championship more than 30 times.

Ethan Poekens won the junior club championship with a two-day score of 137, which was seven under par for the weekend.

Ellen Hodgins won the senior ladies championship, amassing a two-day score of 171. Meanwhile, Dean Misner was named the senior men's champion for the fifth time, with a total weekend score of 148.

The Sturgeon Valley Golf and Country Club also hosted a number of other events throughout the weekend. The first, was a "horse race" on Saturday. This event is played in teams of two, with an alternate shot format, with a team being eliminated on each hole until there is a winner. The club also hosted a banquet on the Sunday, which included an awards ceremony celebrating the victors.

General manager Jordan Dekens is proud of the work done by the Sturgeon Valley Golf and Country Club.

"The golf course is in excellent shape," Dekens said. "It is one of the best courses in the area by far. Our vision is to be the best semi-private golf and country club in Alberta by continuously exceeding expectations in golf, dining and social experiences. We focus on continuous improvement and constantly review feedback to ensure we enhance our experiences each year."
