A 17-year-old Sturgeon Composite High School student was killed in a rollover on the last day of school.
Emergency crews responded to the accident at about 1:35 p.m. on June 15 south of Gibbons on Range Road 233, just north of Township Road 552.
The young woman was driving a 2004 Jeep Liberty and lost control for still unexplained reasons.
“The driver, she lost control and started rolling,” said Const. Martin Miville with the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP.
There were no other vehicles on the road at the time of the accident. They have ruled out alcohol and drugs as possible factors, but are still investigating the possibility that speed might have played a role.
They woman was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and was tossed from the vehicle when it began to roll.
“It is right in the middle of the road and the vehicle rolled and she was ejected,” said Miville.
Photos of the accident show the vehicle badly damaged on all sides. Miville said it rolled several times.
A 17-year-old male passenger was sent to hospital with minor injuries. Police believe he was wearing a seatbelt.
The RCMP were not releasing the young woman’s name, but said she was from Edmonton. Both she and the passenger were students at Sturgeon Composite.
