The province of Alberta has released its list of most popular baby names, and a couple familiar names remain at the top of the annual list.

Olivia and Noah once again took the top spots of the most popular baby names in Alberta in a list released on Jan. 20. Olivia has held the number one spot on the list of girls names for the past 12 years, while Noah has been on the top for boys for six years now.

The other girls' names in the top five of the 2024 list included Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Emma, and Ava. Oliver, Liam, Theodore, and Henry followed Noah on the top five names for boys.

More than 50,000 births were registered in Alberta in 2024, with some names making their return to the top 10 list; including Levi, Ethan, and Harper. Ellie made it into the top 10 list for girls names for the first time ever, and Sophie returned to the top 10 list for girls for the first time since 2011.

The Gazette asked St. Albertans for their 2024 baby names, and some of the responses were fairly unique.

Kayla Stewart named her son, born in June 2024, Atlas. She said her whole family has five letter names, and it seemed to fit him, although he didn't have his name for a week after he was born.

"While many people choose to name their baby right away, we didn't see the rush," Stewart said. "We wanted to know our baby a little better before naming him."

Sarah Lynn Grindle responded, saying that her daughter was born in August and named Soren.

Cassaundra Jones named her twin boys Emmett and Nolan, born in Sept. 2024. Colbey Prince's son was born on Nov. 4, 2024. He was named Sterling and his older sister is named Scarlett, who was born in 2021.

Brandy Lakusta said her son was born in Dec., and she named him Beau.

Other baby names people responded with included Paris, Narelle, Mason, Mia, and Noelle.
