St. Albert seniors get set to putt for fun, prizes

Annual S.A.S.A. fundraiser tournament gets underway at noon on Thursday, July 17

Laughter, friendly competition, and community spirit will fill the course as the St. Albert Seniors Association hosts its 11th annual putting tournament on Thursday, July 17.

The event begins with a noon shotgun start at Putting Horse Ranch, an 18-hole putting course lined with trees and featuring a swan pond. Participants will head back to the S.A.S.A centre at 3 p.m. for a barbecue, along with prizes, a 50/50 draw, and a cash bar.

Kerri Akins, a longtime S.A.S.A. volunteer, said the event is more than just a game, it's also a meaningful way to bring the community together.

“It's a fun event that provides something different during the summer,” Akins said. “We go back to the centre to have a barbecue and play a couple of games, then we give out door prizes.”

The tournament also plays an important role in S.A.S.A’s fundraising.

“We do three to four fundraising events, and this is one of them,” Akins said. “We have five major sponsors this year and we've actually sold all 18 hole signs. We get good support from the community.”

The event brings out a good crowd, rain or shine. The number of participants usually ranges anywhere from 60 to 70 golfers each year, even with Alberta’s unpredictable weather conditions. Golfers can register alone or with a friend.

“A lot of times people will enter and meet others throughout the day,” Akins said. “It's a lot of fun with a lot of laughs.”

The cost of admission is $40 for S.A.S.A members and $45 for non-members. Anyone who wishes to skip out on golfing but still join the barbecue can do so for $15 per person.

With plenty of spots available, everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy a relaxing day of putting. Registrations are open until Monday, July 14. For more information phone 780-459-0433 or apply at the S.A.S.A. front desk.
