An 85-year-old St. Albert woman died Monday morning after being hit by a car while crossing the street.

Around 10 a.m. St. Albert RCMP were called to Boudreau Road in front of the Sturgeon Community Hospital. An 85-year-old woman was crossing westbound in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Boudreau Road.

The driver of the vehicle was a 78-year-old St. Albert woman. No criminal charges have been laid. The investigation is ongoing.

The 85-year-old pedestrian was transported to a hospital in Edmonton and died at approximately 1 p.m.

RCMP could not confirm if the woman was taken to the Sturgeon hospital before being transported to Edmonton.

Kerry Williamson, communications director with Alberta Health Services, said he couldn’t comment on the incident, but said the University of Alberta Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital are the designated trauma sites for the area.

“Based on standard practice, once EMS has assessed the patient and he/she has been deemed a trauma, the patient will be transported to a designated trauma site,” he wrote in an e-mail.

“Without breaching confidentiality, the hospital they were brought to would be dictated by the nature of the injury.”

The name of the deceased is being withheld in respect of the family's wishes.

Road, weather and alcohol were not factors in the collision.

A traffic collision reconstructionist is helping St. Albert RCMP as they continue to investigate the collision. St. Albert Victim Services is also providing support to those affected.
