A 19-year-old St. Albert man has been charged with mischief over $5,000 for damage done to the pickleball courts on Alpine Park earlier this month.

In a July 27 news release, RCMP said Owen Norman Zittlau was arrested and charged on July 12 following an investigation into spray paint damage to the acoustic meshing surrounding the courts.

"On July 4, at approximately 10:35 p.m., St. Albert RCMP received a complaint regarding individuals who were damaging the pickleball courts at Alpine Park with spray paint," the release says. "RCMP members attended the location, located used spray paint cans matching the paint colours used to [damage] the acoustic meshing around the pickleball courts, and received information that three suspects were seen leaving the area, entering a residence near by."

"RCMP attended the residence in question and spoke to three suspects who denied any involvement."

On July 12, RCMP arrested and charged Zittlau, who was one of the three suspects, the release states.

"Replacement cost of the [acoustic meshing] would cost the City of St. Albert approximately $23,700 U.S. dollars, thus the city attempted to clean the spray paint off at this time."

Zittlau has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in St. Albert Provincial Court on Aug. 15, RCMP said in the release.
