Last week the St. Albert Pickleball Club hosted their second annual Special Olympics celebration.

The event marked the end of the pickleball season for the Special Olympic athletes. Over the last eight weeks the St. Albert Pickleball Club has been lending six of their courts to the Special Olympics, allowing for the athletes to play and learn pickleball.

With 30 athletes registered, there was a huge emphasis on creating a one-on-one feel when teaching the athletes. This was made possible by increasing the number of coaches from 18 to 25, all of whom were volunteers. St. Albert Pickleball Club president Eileen McClean was overwhelmed by the volunteer support.

"We had to cap the number of coaches this year because we had so many come back from last year, or want to volunteer. It was amazing," said McClean.

For the celebration, all of the athletes were awarded medals for competing. This was made possible by a $740 grant from St. Albert's Rotary Club, who was also in attendance to hand out the medals to the athletes. McClean expressed her gratitude for their support.

"We are thankful to the Rotary Club for helping us put on this celebration of the Special Olympics."

The St. Albert Pickleball Club, which has 1,018 total members, was really committed to supporting the Special Olympics, even if it meant sacrificing six of their 10 available courts during the summer. This is something McClean says they're happy to do.

"Coaching Special Olympics is one of the most rewarding opportunities to take part in," said McClean. "The athletes are always reaffirming and encouraging each other."
