The St. Albert Cardinals 18U BAEL team fell short in the gold medal game this past weekend.
The Cardinals were the host team for the BAEL Provincials July 26-28, with all games being played at Legion Memorial ballpark. The tournament started off well for the Cardinals, who won their opening game 7-1 over the Edmonton Padres this past Thursday.
After stumbling in their first game Friday against the Parkland Twins Blue 2-1, the Cardinals were able to bounce back against the Calgary Bucks winning 8-5. They were then able to secure second place in Pool A, and a spot in the semi-finals with a 16-6 win over the Webber Wildcats on the Saturday.
The Cardinals bats came alive in their semi-final against the Calgary Cubs on Sunday, securing them a spot in the finals with a 10-6 victory over the top team in Pool B. Setting up a gold medal game against the Red Deer Braves.
However, the Cardinals were unable to carry the momentum from their earlier victory Sunday, struggling against the hitting of the Braves. Unable to overcome the deficit, their great season was ended in a 17-5 loss to the Braves.
The Cardinals were awarded silver medals, and finished the season with a record of 30-9-0.
