Financial Literacy Week is probably the most appropriate time to get people to start being more penny wise and money smart, more savvy and definitely more financially literate.

Certified financial planner Shaun Maslyk and public speaker has a four-week online conference that should do the trick. The guy behind The Most Hated F Word blog and new podcast series is bringing in 10 special guests – all financial experts or entrepreneurial success stories – to make presentations starting Wednesday, Nov. 18.

"Just this year, I'm more convinced that to become financially resilient, we have to just really understand our money stories and the origins of our money and what emotions those evoke. And that starts with knowing your mind: 'what emotions am I feeling?’” Maslyk began, relating it to the theories of Daniel Kahneman, a behavioural economist who won the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his works to determine that people's financial decisions are overwhelmingly emotionally driven.

“That's where this Money and Mind conference comes into play. That equates, if 90 per cent of all of our financial decisions are emotionally driven, why aren't we talking about it?”

It's “cool and sexy and fun” to talk about rates of return, he elaborated, perhaps hyperbolically, adding “it’s difficult, it's dark, it's fearful” to go inward and look at our emotions and our vulnerabilities.

“It takes the ability to deal with guilt and shame that comes along with money. With our social media-obsessed society, we feel like we're the black sheep because, 'Wow, I have to go deal with this stress and guilt around money when everyone on social media is living this good life, and they don't feel it.’ Even though we know that's the highlights and maybe even just the fantasy of their life. That was a little pessimistic but really, it's true.”

Regardless, there are a lot of good reasons why he calls finance the most hated ‘f’ word.

He has lined up 10 speakers to join him as presenters for this conference. including wealth psychologist expert and author Kathleen Burns-Kingsbury, professor of financial planning and financial literacy educator Dr. Matt Goren, international real estate investor and mentor Tim Tsai, keynote speaker, author and executive coach James “Mac” McPartland, KB & Co entrepreneur Kristina Botelho, investment analyst Moez Mahrez, Core Real Estate Group president and CEO David Brown, personal finance expert and blogger Enoch Omololu, financial therapist Derek Hagen, and real estate investing expert and educator Maria Smith.

"I guess in summary, this is designed for people who want to, of course, increase their wealth, but also their well-being. The origin of the word 'wealth' actually is 'well-being'. We want to increase their wealth and well-being and upgrade people's mindset of thinking around resilience and money so that we can live what I like to describe as a flourishing life, not a rich life. That's really why we created this event."
