Members of the local RCMP drug unit arrested a 19-year-old man last week with several different types of drugs and $635 in cash.

Terry Ivan Hozjan, 19, was charged with one count of possession for the purposes of trafficking in cocaine, as well as similar counts for marijuana and two prescription drugs — oxycodone and nabilone. He was also charged with possession of the proceeds of crime.

Officers made the arrest Friday afternoon and found five grams of crack cocaine, three grams of marijuana, six oxycodone pills and eight nabilone pills.

Both of the prescription medications are type of pain relievers. Oxycodone has become relatively common as a street drug.

Const. Janice Schoepp said Hozjan’s arrest was the result of a lengthy surveillance operation and tips from the public.

She said the RCMP tends to see more traditional street drugs, but prescription drugs are showing up more and more.

“It is starting to become more prevalent. We still don’t see it in the same way we see marijuana or crack cocaine.”

Hozjan was released on $1,800 cash bail following his arrest with a number of specific conditions. Among them are requirements he not have a cellphone and a condition that he not come to St. Albert for any reason other than court purposes.

He will make his first court appearance on July 18.
