The local RCMP drug unit wants you to call and you don’t even have to leave your number.
The unit launched a new drug complaint line on Friday that will allow members of the public to report drug dealers or transactions they see in their neighbourhood.
Spokesperson Const. Janice Schoepp said many of the department’s past investigations have started as tips from the public so the unit wanted to reach out and solicit those tips.
“It is offering people the opportunity to provide the information that they have, while at the same time allowing them remain confidential,” she said.
The line connects directly to a voicemail message. An officer from the drug unit will check it regularly and follow up.
While the police encourage people to leave contact information to allow an officer to follow up, tipsters can remain anonymous if they wish, Schoepp said.
The drug unit will continue to follow other avenues of investigation, but its members hope the new tip line will lead to more information and tips.
“It is just another method that is used,” Schoepp said. “It gives people an opportunity anytime they may see something.”
Police have often heard that people fear retaliation for reporting drug activity. They hope the anonymous nature of the tip line will eliminate that, Schoepp said.
