According to the Canadian Institute of Health Information, the ratio of doctors to residents in Alberta has grown faster than other provinces.
Between 2013 and 2017, the number of physicians per 100,000 population in Alberta increased by 11 per cent. In 2017, there were around 250 physicians per 100,000 population, up from about 230 in 2013.
The non-profit provides essential information on Canada’s health systems, with the data used to improve the healthcare system.
According to the latest report, across the country, the amount of physicians increased by 3.1 per cent from 2013 to 2017, with 86,644 working doctors in Canada.
According to Alberta Health Services' physician workforce plan and forecast for 2018 and 2019, of the AHS doctors in Alberta, 44 per cent of those are female.
Of the 640 doctors in the Edmonton zone, which includes St. Albert, 44 per cent are also female physicians.
The zone also has the oldest physician workforce in Alberta, with an average of 38 per cent of working doctors over 55 years old.
According to the report, doctors over 65 years old may start to reduce or leave practice. It said the organization would need to both prepare for more exits, and increase recruitment efforts.
