The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after a Morinville RCMP officer shot a 26-year-old man at the Alexander Reserve last week.
Morinville RCMP officers were called at around 6 p.m. Nov. 16 to a report of a domestic disturbance on the reserve. At some point the call escalated to a weapons complaint.
Police have released few details about the shooting, but Morinville RCMP Staff Sgt. Mac Richards said several officers responded to the call.
Richards did not get into specifics about the officer involved, but did say the individual had more than three years experience with the force.
He said the detachment called in ASIRT soon after the shooting.
“Whenever there is a serious injury or death under the provincial policing agreement the solicitor general is called and they will make a decision as to if the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will be called in.”
Richards did not go into whether the police had any history with the man who was shot and said he was airlifted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Richards said the RCMP is still investigating the original call and no decision on charges in that case has been made.
He said ASIRT is in complete control of the investigation into the shooting.
“ASIRT is looking after the investigation. It is their mandate to look at it and they are taking the lead on it.”
ASIRT’s mandate requires them to investigate all cases where an interaction with a police officer leads to a serious injury or death.
