St. Albert RCMP are holding a virtual town hall today and they are requesting the public send in any questions they have about the RCMP in advance.

On Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. the RCMP will live stream the information session from the City of St. Albert’s YouTube page and will cover topics such as performance plans and the Victim Services Unit.

The public is being asked to send in questions by 4 p.m., today (Sept. 12) to [email protected].

Cpt. Morgan Kyle said they did not get questions from the public during the virtual town hall they held in the spring, and they are really hoping for public engagement at this town hall.

“Any questions that are burning in people's minds for the police, they can certainly ask them, and we'll do our best to try and address any questions that anyone has,” she said.

The RCMP are asking for questions in advance as that is what works best with the live stream YouTube format.

As for why the RCMP are doing a live-streamed town hall instead of in person, Kyle said the last in-person town hall prior to the pandemic was lightly attended.

“Fresh off the heels of the province lifting health mandates, coupled with the fact that the city is fresh into a new school year, the decision was made to host a virtual town hall in hopes it would boost participation,” said Kyle.

“Insp. [Ryan] Comaniuk is hoping to host an in-person town hall in the new year.

During the town hall, Comaniuk will delve into the Alberta RCMP 2022/2023 Performance Plan, which Kyle describes as their policing priorities.

“Insp. Comaniuk will meet with city council and sometimes get some feedback from the general community on what the policing priorities should be. And so, we'll just talk about what those are for the year and what our goals are,” said Kyle

Kyle will be giving a presentation on the St Albert Community Policing & Victim Services Unit: “So, what we do and our role in the detachment and a little bit about the priorities for the detachment and we're also going to talk about the crime gauge so whether there was an increase or a decrease in certain crimes within St. Albert,” she said.
