St. Albert’s intersection cameras are working normally and all tickets that have been issued to date will be processed normally, report city officials.

Last week the City of Edmonton announced it was cancelling all outstanding speed-on-green tickets due to a technical problem with its intersection cameras. There will be no such reprieve from tickets issued in St. Albert.

“We haven’t experienced the glitches that Edmonton has discovered,” said Stuart Fraser, supervisor of St. Albert’s peace officer program.

St. Albert uses the same contractor as Edmonton — Affiliated Computer Systems Inc. — for the processing of intersection violations but has a different brand of camera, Fraser said. The processor advised the city last week that false readings have not occurred with St. Albert’s system and St. Albert’s chief Crown prosecutor advised that the province will continue to prosecute offences in St. Albert as normal, Fraser said.

St. Albert has two sets of automated cameras that monitor speed and red light violations on a rotating basis at the four busiest intersections on St. Albert Trail.

The Edmonton decision to cancel tickets arose after an unverifiable violation slipped through the system’s quality control and screening processes and was accidentally mailed out. The ticket indicated that the offending vehicle was travelling 140 km/h through an intersection even though the pictures showed the vehicle was going much slower.

The result is that anyone currently in possession of a speeding ticket from Edmonton’s intersection safety camera (ISC) system should not pay the ticket, states a City of Edmonton press release. Tickets that combine an intersection speeding violation with a red light violation are also being cancelled, the city said. This technical issue does not involve tickets issued for a red light infraction or photo radar tickets taken outside of intersection areas, the city said.

People seeking clarification on whether their City of Edmonton ticket is an ISC speeding ticket can visit the Edmonton Police Service website at http://www.edmontonpolice.ca/for an illustration of an ISC ticket.
