Lisa Holmes is most definitely Morinville's newest mayor, says the town's electoral officer following a recount, and Rob Ladouceur will be the town's sixth councillor.

Town returning officer Jennifer Maskoske released the results of the official recount of the 2013 Morinville civic election Wednesday afternoon. The recount, done that morning, was meant to confirm two tight wins in the mayoral and council races.

An agent for mayoral candidate Sheldon Fingler asked for a recount of the mayoral vote after Holmes beat Fingler by 18 votes. The recount found that Holmes won 1,034 to 1,018, Maskoske said – a 16-vote gap – meaning that she is the mayor-elect.

An agent for Ladouceur also requested a recount after Jackie Luker beat Ladouceur for the last council seat by just two votes. The recount found that Ladouceur had, in fact, beaten Luker 689 to 684, making him the winner.

Ladouceur said he was very excited by this result.

“I'm very sorry for Jackie Luker – she would have made a fantastic councillor – but I'm very excited to have the opportunity to serve the residents of Morinville,” he said.

Election results become official Friday. All elected candidates will be sworn in on Oct.29.
