May the best team win

The first ever St. Albert Celebrity Cupcake Challenge for the 2011 Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games will probably turn into a fierce competition for bragging rights.

The first ever St. Albert Celebrity Cupcake Challenge for the 2011 Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games will probably turn into a fierce competition for bragging rights.

Armed with a war chest of icing, sprinkles and assorted decorations, 24 teams consisting of two people each will face-off at Servus Credit Union Place this Saturday.

Organizers have invited a colourful roster of celebrity and high profile personalities ranging from politicians, artists, city employees, on-air faces, chefs, police representatives and military personnel. Even the St. Albert Gazette is sending their hot rocket team — advertising manager Al Glaser and graphic designer Lori Mitchell.

Each team is required to decorate 48 cupcakes donated as part of the games fundraiser. “The first six cupcakes from each team will be put on a judging table. Those will be open to the public to vote on. From those cupcakes we’ll be accepting silent auction bids,” explains Lynn Fontaine, co-chair of the games fundraising committee.

“For the remaining decorated cupcakes, people can give us what they want. The sky is the limit. At the end of the day we add up how much money each team has brought in and the highest will be crowned champions.”

Which team has the most flair for decorating cupcakes? Is it Stephen Lecky, the games theme song winner with teammate singer/actress Jessy Mossop? Or could it be Pat Wagensveld, president of the Visual Art Studio Association with her hubby Harry.

On-air personalities such as John Berry, Steve Hogle and Maria Orydzuk will also compete along with MLA Ken Allred, member of Parliament Brent Rathgeber, Maj. Tim Tattrie of the Canadian Forces and RCMP Insp. Warren Dosko to name a few. CTV’s Josh Classen presides as host.

Big City Cupcakes is donating the cupcakes and one colour of icing. “Each team is bringing their own decorations. That will give the cupcakes individuality.”

In addition, face painters, dancers, and games will be on site. Decorating begins at 11 a.m. Teams compete for sales at 11:30 a.m. and judging is at 2 p.m.
