A St. Albert man who pleaded guilty to fraud in a case that saw him take $5,000 from his employer was sentenced to 18 months of house arrest this week.
Scott Ferguson pleaded guilty to a single count of fraud in May and received his sentence at the St. Albert courthouse on Monday.
Ferguson was working at the Rogers Wireless kiosk in St. Albert Centre in 2007 when he began putting money in his own bank account by generating false refunds. In total, Ferguson admitted to taking $5,754.90 from the company. The activity took place over the course of several months in late 2007 before it was uncovered.
A loss prevention officer from the company did notice the behaviour, however, and brought the case to local RCMP in December 2007.
The house arrest proposal was a joint submission from the crown and the defence. The break between his guilty plea and sentencing allowed the probation office to complete a pre-sentence report that both sides agreed was positive.
Ferguson’s term does not include a portion of complete house arrest but, for the length of the sentence, he will be bound by a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Judge Bruce Garriock required him to perform 40 hours of community service as part of the sentence and to take any counselling his probation officer recommends.
He also required Ferguson to pay Rogers back over the course of that term.
