POLICE PRESENCE – St. Albert RCMP officers use a firetruck ladder to get a man down from the cage above the pedestrian walkway that spans the trail. The man had been threatening to jump off the pedway at about 10 p.m. Sunday night.

A drunken man alarmed local residents before being talked down from a local bridge late Sunday.

The 51-year-old resident of St. Albert had climbed on top of the security cage of the pedestrian walkway spanning St. Albert Trail near St. Albert Centre.

He was walking on the cage when officers arrived at the scene shortly before 10 p.m., said Cpl. Laurel Kading with the St. Albert RCMP.

Kading said about four or five officers and members of the fire department were involved in convincing the man to climb back down.

“They were successful in getting him off there,” she said.

Kading said no charges have been laid at this point though the man could be summoned for causing a disturbance and mischief of public property.

She added that the man was intoxicated but she did not know what other reasons he had to climb on top of the bridge.

The man was arrested and officers left the scene around 10:40 p.m.
