A three-vehicle crash on Highway 44, half a mile south of the Sturgeon County border, has left one man dead and several others injured.
The collision occurred on Friday, July 29, at around 3:30 p.m., just south of Township Road 572, said Westlock RCMP Const. Michael Zufferli.
Westlock RCMP responded to the call to assist Morinville RCMP, who have jurisdiction south of the county line.
Sturgeon County paramedics and the Sturgeon County Fire Department also responded to the scene.
Three pickup trucks — one of which was pulling a boat trailer while another was pulling a fifth-wheel — were involved in the accident.
Zufferli said two of the pickups were travelling south and the one pulling the fifth-wheel was heading north.
A Morinville RCMP media release indicates a 41-year-old Edmonton man was killed.
The chronology and cause of the collision is still under investigation, Zufferli said.
Alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor.
At around 4:50 p.m., a STARS helicopter arrived on scene to transport a 12-year-old girl to hospital.
Zufferli added he cannot release the name of the deceased, nor in which vehicle he or she was travelling, until the next of kin have been notified.
The investigation is ongoing, and no charges had been laid as of press time. All vehicle occupants were wearing seatbelts.
