Ken Kowalski is retired but voters in the Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock riding weren’t about to turn their backs on the Progressive Conservative party they have supported for decades.

Monday night they returned another PC MLA to the legislature, giving Maureen Kubinec the seat in a tight battle with Wildrose candidate Link Byfield.

The two battled throughout the evening with the lead in the riding changing hands a number of times before Kubinec slowly pulled away in the end to win by a narrow margin. With all 82 polls reporting, Kubinec had 7,225 votes, the high profile Byfield had 6,975, NDP Trudy Grebenstein 947, Liberal Leslie Penny 900 and Evergreen candidate Lisa Grant had 182.
