So far, the St. Albert Kinettes are pleased with how well things are going with their annual Christmas hamper campaign, especially after last weekend’s bountiful Fill-a-Bus event.
At the same time, they’re asking the public to focus on some gaps in what has been donated.
“It was successful but we didn’t necessarily see some of the items we usually see and need,” said campaign co-chairperson Sharon Gregresh. “I’m very fearful for the toys. Hugely fearful.”
She explained that the closure of Zellers has likely stifled toy donations. In addition to offering a few weeks’ worth of food to struggling families, the Kinettes also strive to provide gifts – even gift cards and movie tickets – to children and teens.
As for food items, Gregresh asked for more peanut butter, canned meats and fish. There has also been a shortfall in juice and cereal but she expects that school collections will eventually satisfy those needs.
Collections will still be accepted through Saturday, Dec. 15. The hampers will be delivered by Monday, Dec. 17.
Cash donations are lower than anticipated as well. Those will still be accepted until January.
