An off-season hot tub installation sparked a blaze last weekend that damaged the exterior of a Grandin home.

The St. Albert fire department was called to the home shortly after noon Sunday and had the fire under control less than 30 minutes later.

“(The homeowners) just purchased a hot tub and because it was getting cold, they drained the water out, but there was still water in the line. It froze, so she was just trying to thaw the line out with a propane heater,” said deputy fire chief of operations Darrel Bliss.

The fire caused roughly $30,000 damage to the hot tub and the home’s siding and deck, with minimal smoke and water damage to the interior of the home.

“It’s kind of unusual,” Bliss said. “I can’t remember the last time we had a fire of this nature.”

Homeowners were home at the time of the blaze and no injuries were reported.

Bliss cautioned individuals using heating devices to be mindful of their actions.

The St. Albert department has responded to three fires in less then two weeks, including a garage fire on Sheridan Drive and a two-home blaze in Braeside that left roughly $250,000 in damages.
