St. Albert’s first microbrewery, Hog’s Head Brewing Co., has been given the green light to establish operations here.
AGLC spokesperson Dadjana Laskovic said Hog’s Head Brewing Co. Canada Inc.’s application to set up at 16 Rayborn Cres. – the current site of Spider Beverage Co. – was approved at the end of May.
Brian Molloy, president of Spider Beverage Co., did not return phone calls prior to press time. He is listed as a director of Hog’s Head Brewing Co. Canada Inc. on the Government of Canada’s corporation database.
The company’s website, www.hogsheadbrewing.ca, confirms the brewery is coming to St. Albert this summer.
Before the brewery can begin operations, it must obtain a Class E licence from the AGLC, Laskovic said.
“In order to issue a licence for this facility, the AGLC still needs to receive all of the required documentation and complete the final inspection of the premises,” she said.
The AGLC lists applications on its website for 21 days before approval is granted. No objections were received in that timeframe and Hog’s Head Brewing Co. got the go-ahead on May 29.
The City of St. Albert issued a building permit to Molloy in April for 16 Rayborn Cres., citing occupancy and interior alterations as the purpose.
Amber’s Brewing Company founder Jim Gibbon told the St. Albert Gazette last week that the south-Edmonton brewery was sharing the 16 Rayborn Cres. facility.
Gibbon refused further comment this week, but Amber’s Facebook page confirmed Wednesday that the brewery is moving to St. Albert.
The AGLC has not received any applications from Amber’s to relocate to St. Albert, Laskovic said.
Although Amber’s is licensed at its Edmonton facility, a new licence must be obtained for relocation. The brewery would not be able to operate at a new facility prior to obtaining a licence.
