One of St. Albert's best known businessmen was recognized Sunday evening not for his entrepreneurial talent, but rather for the modesty and generosity that are also his hallmarks. Ron Hodgson was recognized by the St. Albert Community Foundation at Sorrentino's restaurant on St. Albert Trail for the long list of philanthropic works Hodgson has cultivated over decades.

Ron Hodgson was recognized by the St. Albert Community Foundation at Sorrentino's restaurant on St. Albert Trail for the long list of philanthropic works Hodgson has cultivated over decades.
Master of ceremonies Kent Davidson welcomed a number of dignitaries to the packed, standing-room-only reception. Special guests included Mayor Nolan Crouse, MP Brent Rathgeber, MLA Stephen Khan and Sturgeon County Deputy Mayor Karen Shaw.
Davidson said Hodgson was a natural for the award, despite the auto dealership magnate's skill at staying out of the limelight and remaining behind the scenes. Davidson said Hodgson is committed to helping others less fortunate than himself.
"It's something that's become hard-wired for Ron Hodgson," said Davidson.
Davidson listed off a lengthy roll-call of very worthy charities Hodgson has supported over the years, ranging from prostate cancer to his church.
"The quiet, unassuming dignity with which he pursues his causes ... with one singular focus ... the improvement of the lives of others," commented Davidson.
Mayor Crouse said it doesn't seem to matter what need is in the community, Hodgson steps forward.
"It doesn't matter, Ron is there," said Crouse.
"He has been a tremendous supporter of the youth centre and Servus Place," added the mayor.
Hodgson thanked his wife and kids for their support, and said a few words about why he helps so many people and organizations.
"I just felt really compelled," said Hodgson.
"When people come and see you with their causes, and they're so conscientious with what they're doing ... it sort of becomes my challenge, my problem."
