With less than 24 hours to race day, most athletes dashing in the RunWild Marathon will have their bodies primed and ready to go.

Those that need some mind motivation however, can check out a pre-race event this evening where St. Albert’s own Canadian Paralympic Hall of Famer will be a guest speaker.

Wheelchair basketball player Jennifer (Goose) Krempien will speak about how sport has impacted her life and journey at dinner on the run (pasta night) from 6 to 9 p.m. at the St. Albert 50+ Club.

“Sport has provided me with a chance to experience success and failure,” said Krempien, who debuted on the Canadian women’s team at the 1992 Paralympic Games at the age of 17.

Her athletic career was highlighted by three-straight gold medals during five Paralympic Games and four Gold Cup world championships. She was a tournament all-star at the 1998 and 2002 worlds.

“I plan to talk about why people keep coming back, why they continue to participate, and why sport and activity is meaningful to people,” she added.

Krempien retired from wheelchair basketball in 2008.

She will be inducted into the Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame on May 10, recognizing her contribution to the growth and development of the Paralympic movement in Canada.

Live entertainment for dinner on the run will include musical guests Emily Seal and the Groovy Gang. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors 60-plus and $10 for youths under 16.
